Year 4

 

Welcome to Class 4.

Our themes for this year are Amazing Antarctica, Magnificent Mayans, Exciting Egyptians, USA road trip, Awesome Anglo-Saxons and Rapid-filled Rivers.

Class 4 is all about adventure and exploring, asking questions, learning from our mistakes and believing we can do anything we set out to. In Class 4 responsibility, leadership and expectations are all key and children will take ownership of their learning in order to drive it forward with determination and enthusiasm.  As the year progresses, the children grow in confidence and self-esteem so they can strive and reach their full potential. In June children take a national online test to assess their multiplication skills Children will discover a whole range of themes as we venture through the year together.

In term 1 we begin in Antarctica and follow the journey of Shackleton and his crew. We think about how the changing climate is affecting the world and study the work of Greta Thunberg and write about animals have become extinct largely because of human actions. In term 2 we then go back in time 4000 years to the time of the Ancient Mayans and discover how they lived and thrived including their uses of cacao. This links with our writing as we write diary entries and a story setting for Charlie and the chocolate factory. Year 4 also lead the Christmas play and have swimming in this term.

After the festive period we journey to the ancient land of Egypt, uncover stories from the past and learn all about how this ancient civilization has shaped our way of living. We create our sculptures in a variety of media during term 3 including out of soap. America is next stop in term 4 and here we look at the historic and geographic uniqueness of the ‘Land of Hope and Glory’. We find out about the struggles and the triumphs seen throughout American history and learn of the remarkable people that made America what it is today. We explore hoe electricity works in our science topic and make our own torches in Design and Technology.

 In term 5 we then find out about the lives of the Anglo-Saxons including why they invaded and settled, learning about Anglo-Saxon beliefs and the spread of Christianity and assessing the contribution of the Anglo-Saxons to modern Britain. We will sew a bag for Anglo-Saxon person in our design and technology lessons. Finally, in term 6 Class 4 will be learning about rivers; their place in the water cycle including make pneumatic model, the name and location of major rivers and how they are used by the people that live nearby.

This year will be full of hard work, perseverance, understanding and a lot of fun along the way!
